Vitamin A Myths & Mistakes
What you really need to know about using skincare’s most powerful ingredient
At Mel Cockle Skin, Vitamin A is a cornerstone of many of our treatment plans—and with good reason. It’s one of the most studied, effective, and skin-supportive ingredients available. But with great power comes... a lot of confusion.
From social media myths to outdated advice, there’s a lot of misinformation about how to use Vitamin A safely and effectively. Let’s clear it up.
Myth #1: “Vitamin A will make my skin peel and flake.”
Not if you do it properly.
Yes, some forms of Vitamin A (like strong retinol or prescription retinoic acid) can cause peeling—especially when introduced too quickly or without support. But gentle forms like retinyl palmitate (used in Environ skincare) are far more skin-friendly and can be introduced without irritation through the Step-Up System.
✨ Pro tip: Let your skin adjust before increasing the dose. No flaking needed.
Myth #2: “I’m too sensitive for Vitamin A.”
Actually, sensitive skin often needs it the most.
Vitamin A strengthens the skin barrier, increases hydration, and supports healthy skin function—all essential for sensitive or reactive skin types. It just needs to be introduced carefully, starting with a low dose and paired with barrier-loving support.
💡 Sensitive doesn’t mean weak—it means your skin needs extra respect. We’ll guide you.
Myth #3: “Vitamin A thins your skin.”
It actually does the opposite.
This one’s completely false. While some people experience thinning during harsh treatments (like over-exfoliating or using strong prescription retinoids), Vitamin A in the right form actually thickens the dermis (the deeper skin layer) by stimulating collagen production. This leads to firmer, bouncier, more resilient skin.
Myth #4: “I should only use Vitamin A at night.”
Not always.
Traditional retinol is often prescribed at night due to sun sensitivity—but the fat-soluble forms of Vitamin A (like in Environ products) are stable enough to be used morning and night. As long as you wear sunscreen during the day (which you should be doing anyway), daytime use is completely safe—and often encouraged.
☀️ Daily SPF + Vitamin A = skin’s power duo.
Myth #5: “More is better.”
Not with Vitamin A.
It’s tempting to go all in, but pushing your skin too quickly can backfire. Irritation, redness, flaking, and even barrier damage are all signs of doing too much, too soon. That’s why the Environ Step-Up System is so effective—it’s about building results sustainably, not overnight.
🎯 Consistency > intensity. Always.
How to get Vitamin A right:
- Start low and build slowly (ideally with professional guidance)
- Use a gentle, supportive skincare system like Environ
- Pair with antioxidants, peptides and barrier-supporting ingredients
- Always wear SPF
- Be consistent—it works best over time
