The Science Behind Microneedling: How It Works and What to Expect

A deep dive into one of the most effective skin treatments for age prevention, scarring, texture and radiance.

Microneedling might sound a little intimidating, but don’t let the word “needling” scare you. This treatment is actually one of the most natural, effective, and transformative ways to rejuvenate your skin—without lasers or injectables.

At Mel Cockle Skin, we use the Exceed medical microneedling device to treat a range of concerns, from fine lines and scarring to breakouts, pigmentation and loss of firmness. The results are long-term, collagen-boosting, and skin-smoothing.

Let’s break down what’s actually happening under the skin—and what you can expect from the experience.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. It works by creating controlled, microscopic channels in the skin using tiny needles. These micro-injuries trigger your skin’s natural healing response, stimulating the production of collagen, elastin, and growth factors.

Your skin basically says: “We’ve got some work to do here,” and starts repairing itself—stronger, smoother, and fresher than before.

The science behind the glow

🧬 Collagen & elastin stimulation
When you trigger wound healing in a precise, controlled way, the body sends fibroblasts to the area to build new collagen and elastin—the two proteins responsible for youthful, firm, plump skin.

💡 Increased product absorption
The tiny channels also help your professional serums and actives (like peptides, Vitamin A, and hyaluronic acid) absorb deeper into the skin—making your treatment even more effective.

🩹 Minimal surface trauma
Unlike harsh peels or ablative lasers, microneedling keeps the outer skin layer mostly intact, meaning there’s minimal downtime with maximum results.

What does microneedling help with?

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring and post-breakout pigmentation
  • Enlarged pores and rough texture
  • Stretch marks and trauma scars
  • Dull or ageing skin
  • Skin laxity and loss of firmness
  • Uneven skin tone and sun damage

🔬 Bonus: It’s safe for all skin tones and types when done by a trained professional.

What to expect during your treatment

  1. Skin prep & consultation
We begin with a thorough cleanse, consultation and discussion about your skin goals.
  2. The microneedling process
Using the Exceed medical device, we create precise micro-channels at custom depths based on your skin. We work gently across the face (and neck or décolletage, if included), infusing targeted serums as we go.
  3. Calming & aftercare
Post-treatment, your skin is cooled with a hydrating cotton mask, soothed, and protected with barrier-supporting products. You’ll leave a little pink—like a mild sunburn—but glowing.

🕓 Total time: Around 60 minutes
📆 Recommended course: Every 2-4 weeks, in a series of 3–6 treatments for best results. Alternatively, this is a great monthly treatment to maintain healthy skin.

Post-treatment: What’s normal?

✔️ Mild redness or heat for 24–48 hours
✔️ Slight tightness or dryness
✔️ A radiant, glassy glow within days
✔️ Results that build with consistency

Avoid makeup, sweating, and actives for 48 hours. We’ll provide a complete aftercare plan—including when to reintroduce your Environ routine and how to protect your fresh, healing skin.

When will I see results?

Most clients notice a refreshed, healthy glow after their first session. But real structural changes—like firmer skin and reduced scarring—typically appear after 4–6 weeks and continue improving for months. Microneedling isn’t a “quick fix,” it’s a long-term investment in your skin’s health and integrity.
